Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to audition to become a member of the Dance Department?
Yes.  Any student who wants to be a Dance Department member must participate in our auditions.

What are the criteria for acceptance to the Dance Department & Company?
Auditioning applicants are evaluated on their dance technique, performance quality, and artistry. The judges assess the applicant’s strength, co-ordination, flexibility, ability to sight read movement, ease of movement, use of dynamics, and appropriate use of facial and full body expressive qualities required by the choreography.

How do I prepare for the Department & Company auditions?

The best way to prepare for auditions is to take different styles at surrounding studios and/or take private lessons from an instructor. Basics to work on for auditions are placed on the "Audition" page.

If I audition for the Company, do I have to also audition for the Department?

No. The dancer does not have to audition for both. If he/she is not chosen for the Company but did well enough in the audition, a department acceptance letter will be sent to the student's parent or guardian. If the dancer feels he/she did poorly in the Company audition, he/she is more than welcome to stay for the Department audition.

Are there levels for the auditions & classes?

The Department audition consists of basic movement that any beginner/intermediate dancer has learned in classes. The Company audition is taught on an intermediate/advance pace. If accepted, class placement is by how many years you’ve participated in the department.

Who judges the audition?

The judges are all dance professionals who will not be given any information about the individual dancer prior to or during the audition. Their selection will be based completely on the candidate’s performance during the audition. Scores will not be discussed with any students or parents, and all selections are final.

Can my family and friends watch the audition?

No

If I make Company, may I participate in other sports?

If a dancer makes Company, the Company must be the main priority. Rehearsals conflict with Spring sports; e.g. Basketball, Golf, Gymnastics, Power Lifting, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field, and Wrestling.

If I make Company, may I participate in an outside company?

As long as the company director is okay with the dancer competing under another name, and there are no conflicts with our rehearsal times and appearances. If there are conflicts, the dancer must make a choice. â€‹

Are there any fees?

Yes, Department and Company have fees. Details are listed in the audition packets, department syllabus, and company policy.

Do I have to pay for my own costumes?

No, all costumes are provided through the department.

Do I have to participate in the Spring Dance Concert?

Yes. The Spring Dance Concert is not only the department's time to shine, but it is also the final exam.
